I read the Apostolic Fathers this weekend as translated by Michael Holmes (a revision of Lightfoot). You'll be happy to know that I've ordered both Ehrman and Lake's text and translation in the Loeb series.
Anyhew, I strongly encourage everyone interested in Christianity to read Holmes' translation as it is very good with an excellent bibliography. Unlike Holmes, I think that Lightfoot is pretty much infalliable. I will try and make some notes on my reading... |

Seriously,
It's good to read Holmes because it is a revised edition of Lightfoot with modern bibliography. It's quite good. |

I think I've asked you before about good books for us non-scholars to read for Christian history and the Church Fathers. Is this one you'd recommend?

In this series, the Apostolic Fathers are the first two volumes (sans Justin Martyr). This series is translated into english in the late 19th century. Holmes is translated in the 21st century. Quite a difference in both scholarship and English readability. And Holmes is only one volume... 600 pages with Greek and English. If you just read the English, it's only 300 pages. I read it in about three hours. |
