do any of you have favorite hymns? favorite lyrics or tunes? let us know!
though i eventually drifted away from Lutheranism, i still have alot of affection for the hymns we used to sing in church. in fact, that was pretty much what kept me going to church for years- the hope that we might sing a hymn i especially loved! my favorites have always been- Son of God, Eternal Savior (beautiful tune) Now The Green Blade Rises (sung at my grandmother's funeral) Let All Things Now Living (all around lovely) Tis A Gift To Be Simple (a song loved by Quakers as well!) |

Singing hymns has always been one of my favorite parts of worship service, and my wife & I play in the handbell choir and sing in the chancel choir. I think it's a wonderful part of our ministry in the way that music is truly the universal language. Here's mine:
Joyful Joyful, We Adore Thee, God of glory Lord of love. Hearts unfold like flowers before thee opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day! Words and music from CyberHymnal which btw, is a great resource. ![]() |

Flee as a bird to your mountain
Thou who are weary of sin! Go to the free flowing fountain! Where you may wash and be cleaned! Fly for you saviour is near thee! Call and thy saviour will hear thee! He, on his bosum will bear thee! Oh, thou who art weary of sin! Oh, thou who art weary of sin!

Schubert's "Ave Maria" performed by Pavoratti is the most amazing piece of music I've ever heard. Sadly, since there aren't many virtuosos of Pavoratti's caliber in my parish, we don't sing that one too often. Others I like are On Eagle's wings, Christ the Lord is Risen Today, O Come O Come Emmanuel, and others I know I'm forgetting. And it may or may not count as a hymn, but Kanye West has a song called "Jesus Walks." I don't usually listen to hip hop but that is a good one. Unfortunately it wasn't as popular as some of his others.

Abide With Me; Be Still My Soul; Soldiers of Christ, Arise!; When I Survey the Wonderous Cross; Amazing Grace; The Lord Is My Shepherd, I'll Not Want; As the Dear... These are probably my favorite hymns that we sing at my congregation regularly. Beautiful tunes, beautiful words, and deep meanings for all of them

I like Joseph Smith's First Prayer. They sang it at my baptism, and the missionaries (who were sitting next to me) harmonized so beautifully on it. The one was funny, cause he was singing like the sopranno part, or something, but it sounded good.

Is 'Oh Holy night' a hymn ? - that is one of the most potent religious 'pieces of music' that I know, and one that I sing frequently, I love it so much.
O Holy Night O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining. Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, the night when Christ was born; O night, O holy night, O night divine! O night, O holy night, O night divine! Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming, Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land. The King of kings lay thus lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friends. He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Truly He taught us to love one another, His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother. And in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, With all our hearts we praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we, His power and glory ever more proclaim! His power and glory ever more proclaim
