Part 8, Cain and Abel
Hidden in the Cain and Abel story is the story of El and his father. It is the same story; but with a shift in perspective. One story looks at the present, the other sees the past. The Cain "man" kills the "child" Abel. This is the story of our "man" before the garden, in his second given name. Abel is his first name. The man God, Yahweh God, killed his father (Abel), the father of Yahweh God (Jacob called Yahweh God El Shaddai [El] and John called him God Almighty. Same Guy, the man God.). The Cain/Abel story is the story of the Spirit of God before the garden, also. Why would God Almighty kill his father? BECAUSE he lorded it over their mother and was living off, preying upon, her creation, the living animals of flesh and blood, and because he (El's father) was just a Man who cared nothing for God's children. He was the supreme, transcendent Being. He was NO father at all! There were no "fathers" in the beginning as we understand that term today. To say this another way, the practice of fathering as we understand it now (granted, the understanding today isn't totally clear and clearly hardly practiced, just ask any teenager! How's your father? And they reply: "my who?") had been lost and forgotten. (Later I will return to the lost and forgotten.)
Cain and Abel
See! Our fathers, yours and mine, had bonded to and were just like, the father of God and His spirit, in the beginning. Our fathers were men; but they didn't have a clue how to father their sons and daughters. 6,000 years later, now, we are no longer in that kind of darkness nor are we stupid about actions and consequences. [You can fool some of the people all the time, all the people some of the time; but not everyone always! ] Remember the first day of creation, when God divided the light between day and night? Half of who those men and women were was a mystery, there was no understanding, no knowledge. The "light" was but half present. This was because men's actions to survive (the biological urge is God's urge) were often violent and brutal and men were ashamed and kept their reasons and motives hidden. Shame and guilt are the same coin. Only God could not be dishonest; but nor could His Spirit be forthright (He couldn't tell EVERYTHING to his man, that he killed his grand dad, the boy wouldn't get it! You have to kill to live; don't you?), so he put the truth in a tree and tempted the man to find out for himself. We have to know if we are going to be responsible for our freedom and live it in action and deed. We can't live with shame over why we act, what we want, that is why each and every one of us has to "know" what everyone's personal "I am" is about! I have to be transparent, a buzzy word just now; but one that is very necessary for a personal self. Not something easily accomplished, because of history, my story.
The "transcendent God Being" of all creation didn't begin to take hold in the thoughts of men until some 2,000 years ago when a huge shift happened with the coming of God in the flesh. The incarnation! Wow, no mind wanted THAT. I am talking about God and you, come home! When you kill flesh you kill God, in that unique body. That thought is still like a big: What? God is spirit and can't be killed, it is argued. That's a lie! What I am talking about is personal and yes, personally, you can kill God. When one kills God then that one is alone inside a mysterious body that doesn't belong to him, or maybe her. When a person, like Cain, purposefully takes some body else's life away (even if he doesn't see it as "his"), deep inside that one a volcano erupts and that one is forced to flee for his or her life. It's like the kids say; you are screwed! The God life is consciously connected to all living bodies. The individual is responsibly connected to the feelings of every living body; and your personal living body is the primary example. Your example? For your personal experience and understanding, for knowledge!
Cain is our first example. His body, his being nature, reacts. He has spilled the blood of a child's body (his brother's) on the living ground of his being and that ground cries out to the home of its spirit, heaven. Cain is overwhelmed from heaven. (Noah is later overwhelmed by heaven too, as he sits inside his dark ARK, or the boat of his brain that is now awash with muddy waters, with SIN.) Cain becomes homeless, driven from the very ground, the land, that nourished and sustained and hold him, like gravity to his matter, he becomes anti-. Cain becomes lost. He has no center. He is absolutely alone with his wife. A warning is given to anyone who thinks he might exact vengeance on Cain, and that warning is that anyone who tries will have "his or her being nature" also erased. Vengeance is rewarded with disease. That is our nature's response to all those who personally want to even the score, they will get revenge for revenge. Seven fold vengeance means a "lifetime" will be the price, like the seven days of creation, will be removed. Guaranteed to leave nothing "good" in one's experiences. This is our human nature's response to willful interfering in someone else's life. An eye for an eye. This isn't something men can control or manipulate or ignore, this is law writ on the living flesh nature of our being conscious. Body makes feelings, and minds have to adjust or die.
Eve dies with the loss of her son Abel. She is gone. "Dies" is a new word given with the knowledge of good and evil. Knowledge now understands, knows, dead. Spirit is gone, mother is gone. Remember the seven days of creation? Remember how that story unfolds? God wants and expresses his want. "Let there be!" he says. The spirit, his spirit, then "makes" it. (The world inside our heads can go either of two ways, it can go towards beautiful and attractive, or it can go towards threatening and hostile. That "world" is made.) We have today what we have because God wanted and his spirit made. Spirit makes our wants come true. That is a rock of our spiritual heritage. And we ain't got much spirit today, do we? The New Testament promises one BIG gift, the return of Spirit for all those who pick up their feelings and cling to them like a lifesaver! BECAUSE, from the beginning, man's partner spirit DIED when her son was killed and restored when her son came back to life. This process, told in the New Testament, has one positive consequence, IT KILLS RELIGION and restores us to natural relations with nature and each other.
Another fall out from the Cain/Abel story is the understanding that the "child" makes everything. New Testament tells those who have read it the same in the words of the Christ: Everything that is is because of ME! (Old wisdom "thought" spirit; but old was not correct. Spirit takes us to the one who died in the "first" lifetime of the living flesh body, the baby that guards the garden.) Revelations ends with the restoration of the "child" or lamb on the throne of God with the New Jerusalem returned to earth (It isn't a "city" in Palestine, the New Jerusalem is in the hearts and minds of individuals). Protect the children (AND THEIR MOTHERS and FATHERS) and in just two short generations, 14 years, life finds its balance throughout the whole world. Think about that, can you put off gratifications for 14 years? If most all of us could tighten our belts and hold our breaths for that period, the earth would become a shining star in the whole cosmos like no sun ever shone so bright. Wow. 14 years of civility and BAM. A whole new ballgame, with passion and desire! There would be no repulsion. This Paul is an Aquarius (a water bearer like spirit) and he's a dreamer !
The Cain/Abel story is most explicit. Abel means the Father of God Almighty. Our earliest myths tell a truth that buzzes in the back of everyone's mind and has been buzzing for thousands of years and is still fuzz to too many. The child responds to fair treatment and solid love from its caregivers and also responds to the opposite. The child makes or breaks all ideas of God, its mother and life giver, the living flesh body. The "body" isn't a machine, no matter how science or medicine break it down to study it. "The child is the father of the man," wrote Wordsworth. He was dead on correct, where the word man is synonymous with the God Almighty of the creation in seven days.
Creation, the ability to bring forth new life not just in living bodies but also in ideas, is the natural state of being in your body connected to the living thoughts and ideas of a passionate and desirable existence. We have two bodies and one more promised in our spiritual traditions, the Christ body; but first I wish to explore in more detail our first bodies. The story leaves us with many clues and a large area to explore. It gives us two genealogies that tell the story of each body and how they generated and what became of who. Let's look at these genealogies next.
