Desire will always exist - as many have said it is the attachment to the desired (or the aversion to the undesired) that causes suffering.

Friend Mistermark3,
Rarely find someone asking such questions at RF.
Buddhism springs from Hinduism which is more or less the base for most eastern religions and propably the oldest.
However it is not important about their begining BUt what is important is our own journey in understanding and becoming enlightened.
Friend YmirGF has rightly explained about what elightenment is which is like removing the dust covers. ANd towards that goal of understanding the dust themselves which are the desires or Attachments which we need to remove. Both desires and attachments are inter-related. If you drop one the other drops on its own. You ask about your attachments to parents. There is nothing wrong in that but do remember that Pains arises because of attachments even with parents. If your parents die you will feel a terrible loss due to your attachment but do remember that existence alawys balances each loss by another gain somewhere BUT to undertand that one needs to be in a position where one is neutral about all things.
Friend Ozzie states about all attachments being material; must point out that NOT all attachments/desires are material. Even the desire to find God/ enlightenment is an attachment.
Best example is that of Ramakrishna an Indian Mystic who was enlightened in every way except his attachment to the form of Goddess Kali. Finally he had to even symbolically kill Kali to be free of all forms.
Friend Mistermark3, If you still have not understood, kindly do respond accordingly so as to find more siutable words to clear your doubts.
Love & rgds
