Because the average pistol is not very accurate, esp at ranges over 50m, this is why they are taught to shoot at the greatest mass area. Trying to shoot someone in the legs during a gun battle, is ridiculous. But a nice sentiment anyway.

The key issue for me in looking at the Buddhist precepts is the majot difference with Christian attitudes. These are precepts, each individual selects the ones they will follow AND defines them as tightyl or loosely as they wish, following some at all times others on ocassions.

This puts the person right where they should be, in full control and fully responsible to think through what they should or shouldnt do, how far they go, what is right and wrong.

For instance 'Do not take that which is not freely given' Usually people interprete that as dont steal, but it can be much more than that. What if your boss doesnt offer you a pay rise, or olny a small pay rise? Do you ask for more? If you dont, are you doing right by those who depend on you financially, are you being a doormat? On the other hand, would it be in keeping with the precept to negotiate, to not just accept the first offer? Would it be in keeping to strike for better pay?

Sorry if this is all known to you, but i love the precepts, the way it is placed totally on each individual to take full control and responsibility for theri own morality.

all is known, lol, spend half of my time looking into this stuff ( doing a degree in theology with a lot of it based within the indian tradition). but always nice to hear others opinions on it. i agree, it is a fabulous way of of interprating ethical rules....never one extreme nor the other....we all should take note for a happier life.

still interested to know if there is any implication of the first precept with regards sexual ethics....try as i might i can not see any connection. it is one of the learning outcomes for this module within buddhist ethics and dont wanna miss out on a few marks becauce i am being dense (got all the others covered, just this one i cant see). any opinion gratefully accepted

thanks for the translations. they are great and have saved me loads of work tracking them down. are they pali or sanskit?
you have been a lot of help and i am really greatful. its good to bounce stuff around. thanks
What I posted was from the Digha-Nikaya source as I think it is the easiest to understand. However; to completely understand and get the full meaning of the four noble truths and the eight fold path, if you can get a copy of "A Buddhist Bible" edited by Dwight Goddard ISBN 0-8070-5911-0 it has the complete source(s) from all texts including the sermons and explanations of the Buddha.
