Is Buddhism a religion?
I know many Buddhists see Buddhism in a very different way so I would like everyones opinion on this matter everyone is welcome to answer Buddhist or not. Please give a reason for your response (if you feel like it). |

When there's an -ism or an -ity attached, it's almost always to designate a "religion" - a packaged identity or "spirit" to which one may ascribe one's being.

So far it seems equal what people think.

Some forms of Buddhism are a religion,
some forms are not. I prefer the ones which are not, they fit better with my Christianity. ![]() |

Friend Somkid,
It depends on your concept of a religion. If religion is taken as a path / way to nirvana / salvation / samadhi etc. surely it is so. if you have any other concept of religion, please share the same, as I would not know. love & rgds |

I picked "none of the above" because it seems to me that Buddhism is a religion, philosophy, way of life, or some combination depending on what the proctitioner wants it to be.

I was thinking about this earlier. In my opinion, it depends on what type of Buddhism you practice. If you believe in reincarnation and all that jazz, then I'd call it religion. If, however, you just take on board the mindset and philosophy, then I'd say it's not following a religion, it's just having a certain state of mind.
Much like if someone were to practice Christianity, but not believe in God or Jesus. Much in the same way you might be driving along and say, "Man, the guy in front is such a Christian driver... some of us have to work, buddy, get a move on!" |

It depends how you define "religion."
I voted that Buddhism is above religion. I don't think of Buddhism as a religion or as a philosophy, though it has elements of both. I don't think it's comparable to Abrahamic religion or Western philosophy, either one; to me, it supersedes them both.

You see it as a Hindu philosophy, too, don't you?
