One take on this is that to liberate all sentient beings is first to liberate them from your mind. After that social responsibility to others becomes clear, or so the story goes.

There are myriad selves causing endless fractured reflections in the mind. So long as the "other" is an object in the mind we can't liberate them because it is we ourselves who bind them. When the mind is empty we can see.
