Sometimes I see people that mix Buddhism with other religious beliefs. Like the one I'm use to is Shinto and Buddhism. I have read that the two don't go against each other, but in fact work with each other nicely. Most of Japan fallows a a mix of both(though you still get people that are all ether Shinto or Buddhist). What do are Buddhist brothers and sister here think about that mining of Buddhism in religions.
Also, I have seen Buddhism(mostly Zen) mixed with thing like the Martial Arts. Though not religious in itself, Martial Arts and religion can be one and the sane at times(one plays a big part in the other). Thoughts? |

Martial art and Buddhism mixing?
Quote:
Martial art was introduced to the shaolin monks as a mean of excercise for monks who spend a lot of time doing sitting meditation. |

I've seen the thinking of Zen in thing like Swordsmanship and Archery. The whole no mind or empty mind. That's what I was getting at, but Shaolin Kung Fu is a good one too. I guess that part of me post doesn't really apply here.

I know several Buddhist ministers who are also kendo practitioners. It's not at all unusual in Japanes Buddhism.

Most Ch'an Buddhism is mixed with Taoism but strictly from the philosophical aspect. There is very little in Buddhism that can not be adopted by other religions as it does not claim authority nor does it prescribe a god or divine creator.

When using Zen for martial arts, most people think of the term, " To be one with". To be one with, the sword, the pole, the nanchucks etc. This term is not actually zen for applying to the martial arts. What this term is, is a misuse of Buddhist termanology per se.
To use zen in the martial arts, is to develop, "No Mind'. What is no mind? This is the mind that does not abide anywhere. Once after practicing whichever martial art one does, when one faces an opponent, then this is where no mind comes in. What must be done, is to not think of living, dying, the opponent, or oneself. The mind must not abide anywhere, no hatred, no anger and no fear. How does one aquire this No mind? The same as the martial arts, years of practice, preferably with an experienced teacher, who has already attained this NO MIND.

I've been training in martial arts for about two years myself now but did it for the discipline, focus, and self-defense aspects. Until now I never thought of combining it with the zen aspects of my faith to help me in reaching "no mind". Thanks for the inspiration guys^_^. And in answer to the OP I personally combine Zen Buddhism with Christianity and Paganism.
