I encourage you on this enterprise. Last year, I attempted to become a vegetarian. I failed.
Perhaps I will try again this year.

Two monks are sitting on a mountainside, high above the rest of the world, practicing their meditation. At some point, one of the monks looks down upon the world and sees: little fish being eaten by bigger fish; birds pulling worms from the ground; cats pouncing on birds and tearing them apart; dogs running down cats and rabbits; lions taking down gazelles and disembowling them;... (need I go on?)... heyenas and vultures flocking around the "left-overs;" and humans hunting and slaughtering other animals.
The first monk says, "Ugh!, how digusting! They're eating each other!" The second monk opens his eyes, looks down upon the same bloody scenes of bloody carnage and says "Oh, how beautiful! They're feeding each other!" ---------- Vegetarianism is also an attachment. If you wish to avoid causing unnecessary harm to animals, I would suggest that you advocate against factory farming and inhumane butchering practices, don't buy meat in the grocery stores and don't order it in restaraunts. BUT also, don't turn it down when it is served to you by others. (In the interest of full disclosure, I do this only marginally well myself. Occasionally I get a craving and instead of fighting it, I eat what I am craving, write it off as part of the process, and move on.)

That confuses me, Lilithu. I thought attatchments caused suffering... what suffering does vegetarianism or veganism cause?

If suffering at the idea of people causing other living creatures to suffer is an attatchment, I'll stick with it.
Most vegetarians I've encountered don't mind people mistakenly offering them meat... just the insistence that they can eat fish or chicken when they tell the person they're vegetarian, because "that's not really meat!" I just don't get the logic behind that, Lilithu. It's like saying that I'm too attatched to Darfur because countless people dying and being displaced and raped makes me sad. It seems like the apathy would cause more suffering than any sadness on my part. |

If you'll reread my original post, I suggested to St0ne that he advocate against factory farming and inhumane slaughtering practices. I suggested that he refrain from buying any meat himself, and thereby adding to the demand. I did not advise him to be apathetic in his actions. However, feeling sad about the suffering of others does nothing to to alleviate their suffering or yours.
