I can't speak on behalf of every Bible reading individual but I'd wager that many would read this to mean the same.

Okay, I have a bit of an issue with this.

• One - God isn't even mentioned in the KJV version

• Two - The KJV version mentions a branch - that's it. Yet this MSG version ads stmp, tree. (I know it's similar, but why?

• Three - KJV version says the person will 'fall', not have a 'dead life' as the MSG does.

Any other discussion on this? Are all bible versions this different?

all bible versions are this different when compared to the message version, it's a one-of-a-kind version... almost like no other, one might say

Common, perhaps. But sole? No. I, for one, did not read the two passages to mean the same thing. Similar things, yes, but certainly not the same.

It's not about MY interpretation of this text. This is about reading in context.

This verse is ONE verse of a 31 verse Chapter. And if you read the Chapter from start to finish...you'll know that it's discussing the faithful vs. the unfaithful and the Lord is mentioned in verse one. This DOES pertain to God.

Doesn't matter that one version of the Bible used different verbiage. The message is the same. This isn't about my personal interpretation...this is about reading the verse in context.

It's proverbs. IT's a collection of many times unconnected sayings. These sayings were broken into chapters and verses because of one writer's interpretation of the text. We then add to this yet another interpretation (that of the message translation) and it becomes so heavily based in interpretation that the true meaning gets lost. There are too many interpretations upon interpretations. There is no original text to look at, but only interpretations of interpretations. Reading the surrounding text is reading interpretations of interpretations. To say that reading these interpretations of interpretations will necessarily result in YOUR interpretation is arrogant and it doesn't take into account the layers upon layers of interpretation. When interpretation gets layered that much, it leaves no room for serious, personal interpretation. That's why it is my belief that things should stay as true to the original, or to the oldest thing we have, rather than heaping even more interpretations upon the text, obscuring its true meaning from a reader.

Maybe. But Chapter 11 happens to contain a collection of pretty connected sayings.

There are too many interpretations upon interpretations.

I have several interpretations and I don't see where the meaning is lost or changed with the SLIGHT variation in verbiage. And you know, that's just my opinion.

I think I'm just having a hard time understanding how many interpretations one can get from this particular chapter of Proverbs. Have you read it? And have you read it in its entirety from more than one biblical translation?

This is the thing. This isn't about my interpreation. I could care less if you get what I get from these verses.

What I'm telling you...is there aren't but so many ways in which you can interpret THIS PARTICULAR Chapter. If you think me arrogant...fine.

I just want to point out to you that when I'm reading the SAME CHAPTER in different versions of the Bible...
