I have noticed that currently is popular in many congregations to believe on the words of a verse and not the principles underlaying the words. I find this idea wanting in many ways. "Speak when the bible speaks and be silent when the bible is silent" can be taken to extremes and its principle can be lost. Let us look at an obvious example:
27"You have heard that it was said to those of old,"You shall not commit adultery. 28But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. Matthew 5:27-29 NKJ Most of us understand the principle: dont think lustfully toward another because the thought is similar to acting out the sin and you should do what you can to avoid the temptation. Now let's mince the wording: 1) this applies to men or lesbians (just for argument's sake) because of: " looks at a woman to lust for her" phrase. 2) this applies only to the married as adultery can only be committed within the bounds of marriage. Fornication is sex outside of the wedlock. 3) the last verse is obviously minced to be a command of action. What do you think about this idea of mincing words? What areas\principles is it done to the most? Last edited by Pilgrim of this Reality; 02-06-2005 at 05:41 PM. |
