The Dome of the Rock was there for centuries before the modern state of Israel existed and when it was built Jerusalem was under muslim control and there wasn't a temple there at the time.

Maybe because they don't want a mass riot on their hands?? And there's freedom of religion!? Also i'd bet money that those within the more religious communities in Israel as well as the Orthodox Jews in the States might crap themselves if someone
other than the Moshiach ben David rebuilt the temple.

The Temple was the home of the Holy of Holies, this was G-d's house!! It was the central point of the jewish faith. I wonder how Scott and the other catholics would react if Vatican City was razed to the ground with nothing left but a side of St. Peter's Basilica and the catholics of the world weren't permitted to rebuild it? I'd wager they'd be making pilgrimages to pray to a wall too!

If we're talking about the Moshiach ben David i think the Tanach and writings from the sages and people like Rambam should suffice....
