You must have missed the parts where Jesus dined in Pharisees' homes. When one is invited into a home in that culture, and especially when at table, the host is resposible for the guest's safety and well-being. That includes defense against attackers.

That sounds like a lot of extrapolation on your part. What verses are you referring to?

Also, in context of this discussion, I'm pretty sure the Pharisees in the stories never defended Jesus's teachings or his claims about himself. In fact, when Nicodemus does so in John 7, the Pharisees in the story ridicule and insult him.

Any other "examples"? So far you seem to be really stretching to demonstrate "they often defended him."

The culture was what the culture was. A Pharisee would never invite a person to his table that he was not prepared to defend.

Nicodemus was a Pharisee. So were other followers of Jesus. This necessitates a belief in his teachings.

They had their differences, to be sure. But they also, apparently, had some affinity for each other.
