Why are there bibles in hotels?

Because some Christians put them there so that if and when you get bored, or you happen to be in that hotel as some part of a journey of self discovery, you can read it and decide whether you want to be Christian too.

Some hotel chains now offer a smorgasbourd...smorgasbord...a cornucopia of religious texts to pick from. Well, maybe not that many but at least the most popular.
As long as the hotel has doughnuts who cares? I think the Gideons have this idea that one day a lonely and desperate traveling salesman or prostitute will pick up one of their Bibles and thereby make a divine connection and be delivered from a life of sin and shame. And I'm sure there are stories out there of exactly that kind of thing happening.
