I'm not sure why you're disregarding the Old Testament, which describes all sorts of works that please God (such as burnt offerings, which create a smell pleasing to the Lord, apparently... if you need a chapter and verse reference, let me know and I'll dig it up).

And the New Testament has several instances of either Jesus or Paul linking salvation with various actions. Regardless of how useful or useless God finds those works, the New Testament does describe them as things that will lead to salvation.

You are confusing issues. Offerings of thanksgiving or atonement offerings as prescribed by the law were never meant as justification for entrance into heaven. The Bible is clear that the only works done by man that are acceptable to God are those that are lead by the Holy Spirit. The only way to be lead by the Holy Sprit to do good works is to be born again. The only way to be born again is to accept Christ. By faith.

In those instances it is covered by other scripture that says that no work of man is acceptable without the Holy Spirit leading them (see above).
