I looked Begooten up on dictionary.com and the most common definition was offspring generated by procreation. Basically what it means is that God was Jesus's literal Father. NOt just the Father of His spirit but the Father of His body too.

Because in order fo Jesus to be able to fulfill His role as Saviour He needed to be sinless and be able to give His own life. The genetics from His immortal father, God, gave Him the ability to not only survive things that would kill a mortal human, but it allowed Him to give His own life and then take it up again. But withouth the mortal genetics from His mother, Mary, it would have been impossible for Him to die. So basically He was a hybrid. From Mary he inherited mortality, from God he inherited immortality.

Both these parts were neccessary to fulfill His role as Saviour. Without them He couldn't have been sinless nor would He have had any power over death.

The jewish religion was originally intended to prepare people for the comming of Christ. But it was changed over time and the people lost the focus of their religion. The Law of Moses(Jewish religion) was a preparatory gospel given to the Children of Isreal because they weren't able to live the higher law. When Christ came He fulfilled the Law of Moses and now we are supposed to live the Law of the Gospel. We read in the Book of Revelations(I think) that upon Christ's second comming they will recognise Him as their Messiah, But it wont be until they see the marks of the nails in His hands that they will realise that their Messiah is actually Jesus Christ.

We believe that not only will people have the chance to accept Jesus Christ in this life but they will have the chance after we die.

All persons, including Jews, shall be judged on the basis of the whole life lived. All those, including Jews, who repent of their sins and turn to Jesus as Lord and Master (notice that this is the sort of attitude we must take toward God) shall be saved.

With Jesus, "begotten" does not carry a literal meaning. "Son" is applied to many sorts of people in the bible. It is used of believers generally, the Jewish people as a whole, and individual holy men. By calling himself "the only begotten son of god", Jesus was trying to emphasize that his sonship is different from all others. Uniquely, he is begotten of God. Being begotten, Jesus has the same divine nature as the Father, but there is still a personal distinction to be made between the Father and the Son.

Traditional Christians don't believe the sonship to be literal. Otherwise, as with pagan myths, you'd have to have a god come down to earth and have sex with Mary. That would make Jesus, like Hercules, the literal son of a god.

I agree. I believe begotten tends to be a little bit vague of a translation from the original greek. The word begotten, as when used in John 3:16, was used to show the uniqueness of Christ and not to give support for a literal son.
