Simon Peter said in reply, " You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
Jesus said to him in reply" Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

There is actually a mystery in that verse. let me show it to you sir,

MATTHEW 16:13-15

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?

Jesus was asking who they thought the son of man is.

and so, Peter answered in verse 16 "Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

and jesus said on verse 17

Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.

Jesus was confirming the response of Peter that the son of man is the christ, the son of the living God. that was the subject of the conversation.

The subject of the conversation was who is the son of man? which is christ

then Jesus said on the next verse

"And I tell you that you are Peter,[c] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[d] will not overcome it"

he was referring to the subject of the conversation.

This rock = the son of man = Jesus christ

proof?

First, we already know that when it was saif that the word became flesh it referred to jesus right?

let see what Peter himeself said

1 Pet 2:6

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

he referred to Jesus as a stone, a chief corner.

let us read on

1 pet 2:8

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: where unto also they were appointed.

there are people who stumble at the rock, like those who stumble at the word.

meaning if jesus was the word, and the word was the rock where the church is built

therefore, The one true church is built upon the word. or the teachings of christ in the bible.

that is why

John said

1 John 1:3
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ


you will have fellowship with the apostles. with the father, and jesus because of the gospel ("That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you")

hence, you are in the one true church if you keep the word, which the apostles written, which is the word where christ built his church.

Peter means rock. And yes of course Jesus is the Head of the Church. That is one of our guiding principles.
