Does scripture even say there is a battle at Armageddon?

Revelation 16:16 only says the unclean spirits are gathered there, and from there they are to go out and gather the kings of the Earth. But there's no mention of a battle at Armageddon.

ESV Revelation 16:14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. 15 ("Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!") 16 And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon

Interesting. In the King James Bible it says "they" are the evil spirits and "he" (singular) gathered "them" at Armageddon. That means if you go by this translation, only the evil spirits were gathered there.

[14] For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

[15] Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

[16] And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

We'd need to know who the "them" is in the latter part of verse 14. There is a battle, and it is interpreted cosmologically. You need to at least go back to verse 12, which begins this little section.

ESV Revelation 16:12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east.

ESV Revelation 16:13 And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs.

Ok, I checked the Greek, and the one who does the gathering is singular, but the ones gathered are plural. I think that the one who gathers are the "spirits of the devils" and it's a singular verb taking a plural subject, which is quite common in Greek. This does not mean that there are only evil spirits there, because it's quite clear from verse 12 and 14 that they are gathering kings for battle.

lit "he/it gathered"... "them," but he/it can refer to a plural subject
