Default Wars and Rumours of Wars

What do you feel this is in reference to from Matthew 24:6:

"And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars..."

The timing of the second coming of Christ and the final establishment of his kingdom.

Matt. 24.3 what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

The wars and rumors of wars are part of the answer to this question, along with many other things...

Firm grasp of the obvious. Can you add anything as to what or when those wars will be?

Sure. The "wars and rumors of wars" fits any point in human history from the time of Christ until now, as does every other indicator of Christ's return in that chapter.

Therefore, the message is the same as elsewhere, that Christ's coming will be a surprise, like a thief in the night.

I expect a thief at night. Now if he came in broad daylight - he's got me

There have always been wars.

The only thing that has changed is our technolory that now tells us about them instantly.

The one thing that has changed is the advent of nuclear weapons. Now we have the ability to destroy the world.

We never had that before.

What do you base that on, a Biblical observation or your own opinion? By that I mean are there any other passages which verify your view of the wars and rumours of wars. There have been wars and rumours of wars since forever. What makes this mention special?

Using the Bible as a guide, there are no other mentions of war until the book of Revelation. Should those wars be the guide by which we understand what the phrase from Matthew means?

Quite frankly, we don't know.

And what the mind lacks, the imagination will attempt to fill in the blanks.

War in certainly coming, but we will not know what spiritual change will occur because of it.

It's special because it's attributed to Jesus.

I'm not sure if there's anything else in the NT - other than the other passages where Jesus says that his coming cannot be predicted - that specifically indicates that wars and rumours of wars will always occur. It's common sense, and that interpretation is predicated by the context and other teachings of Jesus.

I'm sure you're familiar with Jesus saying that not even he knew when he would return, and that it would be a surprise. Everything in this section fits the surprise motif, even though it's couched in language that indicates that he is answering the question...
