Now most would say it is translated as "Thou shalt not murder" but this was brought up in another thread...is there a difference? In the Biblical context? is there a difference between Killing and Murdering??

The professor that taught the ethics class brought that verse up... In my opinion, murder is purposeful killing without justice.

I think there is a difference--and I know there is alot of discussion about this in relation to the 10 comandments. So in my mind (for what its worth) murder-is taking a life with deliberate intent, with malice, and premeditation. In general I think most people think murder can only be applied to humans--my personal belief is that it can also apply to animals. Killing in my mind tends to be accidentally causing death-and/or slaughtering animals raised for food, stepping on a bug--things along those lines. Since I am a carnivore I prefer not to think of slaughtering cows and pigs for butchering as murder--

Kill and murder on the surface mean the same thing. rasah (the original hebrew) can be used for either one
"He was killed by someone with a knife" or "He was murdered by someone with a knife" both mean "Someone stabbed him and he died." Either way, taking the life of another human being, intentional or unintentional, is still a sin. |
