When my Bible instructor asked me about my reservations about the Bible I explained that it was very difficult for me to accept a book that did not offer a woman’s perspective. He proceeded to explain to me that God handled the people according to the customs and intellectual level of the people at that time. I could not believe that a Supreme Being would lower His will and personality to accommodate a group of primitive individuals unless the teachings that this God was promoting were the sole responsibility of just this chosen society. Are there any parts of the Bible that we can follow in God (good) conscience? Are the parables, the proverbs, illustrations, appropriate for these current times? Are we surrounded by enough examples that we can glean biblical understandings without a Bible? When we think about God’s lack of physical intervention in modern times are we a forgotten society or has God found it difficult to deal with us because of our modern technological, intellectual environment? Are we any different than the people described in the Bible? |

Professor Harold Bloom's conjecture (and he has strong evidence to support it) is that the author of the "J" document was actually a noble woman in the court of the son of Solomon.

All it would take is for god to come here right now tell us what he wants and I'm sure everyone would fall in line as long as it was morel and just unlike most of the bible.

He already did that. We nailed him to a tree for it.

There are some sections of the Bible that offer a womans point of view. The Book of Esther for example. There are many examples of wonderful, strong, faithful women in the bible. Unfortunatly there aren't more. I don't really like it saying that those people were primative. They simply had a different culture with different technologies available. There were some aspects of those cultures that were better than our current on and some aspects of our culture that are better than ours.
But in realation to the Bible there are several different laws revealed to different people. But there are reasons for it. After Adam was cast out the Gospel was revealed to Adam except that this version of the gospel was slightly different becasue CHrist hadn't made his atonement yet. Then the Isrealites were made slaves by Egyptians. After Moses freed them God tried to give then the same previous gospel except the people rejected it. So God gave them the Law of Moses. This was preperatory gospel. This was because loved them and wanted to help them eventually be able to live the full gospel. Then Jesus was born and fulfilled the Law of Moses and brought the fullness of the Gospel to the people. This is why there are many different laws and commandments throughout the bible. Most of them in the old testement pertain only to those people. Also we must remember that their culture was different. If we think some things in their culture were wrong, it is irrelevant. We live in a different world today with different people. That is why I believe it is so important to have modern prophets. That way we can know what God's will is for us today and how to deal with our modern problems. Somkid: If God did that it would invalidate His entire purpose for sending us here. The purpose of this life is to see if we will follow God's will without and obvious evidence that it is the right thing to do. You won't find that exact quote in any scripture but it's the jist of it.

Have you read Bloom's book on the subject? I didn't find it very convincing.
