Many believe they are forgeries and not writtten by the apostles but other men. Why were they written decades after the death of Jesus.

All the books? Matthew - Matthew. Mark - Mark. Luke - Luke. John, John. Romans-Hebrews - Paul. James - James. 1 & 2 Peter - Peter. 1, 2, & 3 John - John. Jude - Jude. Revelation - John.
The epistles were written decades later because that's when people started falling away and needed that extra prodding to keep them on the right track. Revelation was written later because Jesus didn't think it was good to reveal that stuff while he was on earth; it had to wait until later. As for the gospels, they probably weren't written down until later because they were busy, and didn't see a need for them to be written so soon after he died.

The Torah and the TaNakh were not written in their present form until about two hundred years before Christ. Though attributed to Moses, the Torah gives very clear signs of five different authors. The fact is that the books of the Torah and the TaNakh were written before that, but they were not compiled and given a recision until around 200 BC, that's more than a millenia after the time of Moses. The books existed in oral traditions and in written versions that differed from each other by distance and dialect. This is true of the Gospels as well. But its decades not centuries. The oral tradition and early lost written works were not put into final form as the New Testament until the COuncil of Nicaea. The Qur'an existed for a number of years in various versions. Fear that those versions would cause schism prompted Umar to order that a perfect version be written down and distributed to the various Muslim communities so that the Qur'an would be protected. To further that he ordered the destruction by fire of older versions. Not until the 19780's were any of these earlier writings of the Qur'an ever found. I don't think it matters, Bang. God is sufficent protection for His words. I am just glad that as a Baha`i, we have in archives all of the writings of Baha`u'llah in His own hand or as taken down during dictation by a handful of secretaries. Regards, Scott

I really can't believe what you wrote, but as you wrote it then I must. Whoever compiled the the gospels of NT are unknown. Consensus of scholary opinion is that they were written around AD70, the time of the Destruction of Jerusalem by Titus. In my opinion, the authors will never be known. All one can say is that the Gospel of John is anti-Jewish in tone. |
