Hey Michel,

An interesting challenge. I'll try to find some kind of authoritative answer to this. In the meantime, can you find something that says they have a good work ethic? Or, one that is better than in the US? I would be interested in reading that also.

As an American, I have single handedly worked to lower our GNP by way of www.ScubaBoard.com! The last time I checked, my users collectively spend almost 10 years on my site, every single month! Woooo Hoooo, makes me want to dance!

As Sunstone aluded earlier, I think "work ethic" is overrated. In my opinion, we work far too hard in America. We should take a page out of Europe's book and get a little R & R now and then.

Hi Ceridwen,

While I certainly would like more time off too, who is going to pay for it? If they can get by without me at work then why should they keep me, so I could have more vacation time? Don't get me wrong, i would like that very much, but doubt whether I could pull that one off.

What is the advantage of working long hours?
Who benifits? you or the company?
is there a correlation between long hours and productivity?
Why should you be afraid of taking time off or Hollidays?
Does contracted time off, belong to you or the company?

I was always salaried my whole working life.
In my last position we worked flexihours, I always had more hours in credit than I could ever take. so I wrote them off every three months. to save keeping tabs on them.
I was the poor b... who had to keep the rest of the department up to the mark.

If any one was right up to date with his work load, and he wanted some time off my answer was always yes. But when I needed a special effort from them I always got it, no arguement.

I was not interested in the number of hours put in, but the amount of work got out.
And output and the cash equivalent was alwasy the important thing.

I got back from accounts, up to the minute figures every month. and that was what I was measured on, that and satisfaction statistics from my customers.

We were the only department in the college that always bettered its budget targets.

How many hours did they work? 37.5 hours per week.
overtime? never more than 1% per month.

It should never be about hours, but measured work that matters.

They can always afford contracted time off. is factored into their cost base and bottom line. You are the mug if you don't take what you are due.
They will only negotiate more if they can see that you are already worth it.
Look around, it is the good productive workers who know they are needed, that get away with murder. I bet they get days off whenever they want them.
