In searching through the Bahai threads, I've learned that Bahai teaches that most religions, primarily the dominant ones through history, are progressive revelations from God. However, it is admitted that some religions are not from God. Which religions are these, and why are they wrong?

And considering the origin of Scientology, that would be on my personal list as well. I mean, a religion based on a bar bet between two SF writers? Hm, not exactly a sound basis for a religion, eh? |

What about Satanism? I thought I also heard that mentioned by someone, not sure if it was you? Is Satanism from God in your view? If not, how is it false? FerventGodSeeker |

Hi, Seeker! :-)
I'm probably the one who mentioned the devil-worshipping sorts of satanism as a good example of false religion, along with Jim Jones. And Booko mentioned several similiar unaccepted groups. Basically, anything polytheistic appears to be man-made, too. (And I will qualify this by pointing out that Hinduism in fact teaches the existence of One God named Brahman <not to be confused with Brahma>.) So while Joseph Smith may have been a "seer" (don't ask me for the definition), LDS teachings as I understand them definitely fall into this polytheistic category.... Regards, Bruce |

MAJOR EDIT: "There can be no doubt whatever that the peoples of the world, of whatever race or religion, derive their inspiration from one heavenly Source, and are the subjects of one God. The difference between the ordinances under which they abide should be attributed to the varying requirements and exigencies of the age in which they were revealed. All of them, except a few which are the outcome of human perversity, were ordained of God, and are a reflection of His Will and Purpose. Arise and, armed with the power of faith, shatter to pieces the gods of your vain imaginings, the sowers of dissension amongst you. Cleave unto that which draweth you together and uniteth you. This, verily, is the most exalted Word which the Mother Book hath sent down and revealed unto you. To this beareth witness the Tongue of Grandeur from His habitation of glory." (Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. 217) re: Joseph Smith "As for the status of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Faith, he is not considered by Bahá'ís to be a prophet, minor or otherwise. But of course he was a religious teacher sensitive to the spiritual currents flowing in the early 19th century directly from the appearance of the Báb and Bahá'u'lláh and the Revelation of Their Messages of hope and Divine Guidance." (Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 511) Whether we agree with the LDS view of God or not, there's still a Manifestation (Jesus) involved in the picture. And this last quote from Lights of Guidance (from a letter from the Universal House of Justice in 1977, btw), does not indicate that LDS is "man made." It just says we don't recognize Joseph Smith as a minor or major prophet. Well, we knew that...and so do our Mormon friends. Sheesh, if we did believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet, we would be Mormons, yes? Last edited by Booko; 05-11-2006 at 09:32 AM.. |
