You might try a piece of wood, and lay it somewhere out of the way if your cat is an indoor cat.
Personally, I might try those soft paws for my black cat, who is primarily an indoor cat.

And yeah, clipping claws for a cat wouldn't be a lot less..probably around $12. I have one kitty who's very nervous about getting her claws clipped, so I only do one paw at a time and wait a week in between. And then she gets her treat, so she's calmed down a bit. |

I provide them with ample scratching posts and these ramps with replacable cardboard inserts, and I rub what they're supposed to be scratching with catnip. When they scratch the furniture, the evil spray bottle of water gets them from across the room. It doesn't take more than a week for a new cat to figure out where to scratch. |

You may have to wrap your cat in a towel to restrain it. Another option is to get a sedative from the vet to calm kitty down.
The actual clipping is a snap. I use toenail clippers and rarely even watch what I'm doing anymore. I do it by feel and have never hit the vein. The trouble is, they grow back in a week or two, so paying someone to do it can add up to a serious expense over the years. |
