In The Beginning: A Short History of the Hebrew Language By Dr. Joel M. Hoffman (New York University Press, 2004) ![]() I posted this elsewhere, and I'm reposting it here to give this book the focus that I believe it deserves. Interested in, for example, the 'meaning' of Elohim? The discussion of the wonderful Hebrew vowels is more that enough to justify adding this work to one's personal library. But what I find most valuable about Hoffman's discussion is that it honestly and explicitly acknowledges the extent to which our interpretation of Paleo-Hebrew is informed speculation.

This looks like a pretty good book. Is it something that somebody like me, who knows absolutely nothing about hebrew, would profit from without first reading some sort of introductory book, or is it pretty well written for a first time reader?

Excellent question, and the answer is: unreservedly yes. You'd love the book, Aqualung.
