An American Episcopal priest has been recently suspended for a year from priesthood and other church tasks for telling an American newspaper, Seattle Times, that she was 100 percent both Muslim and Christian. The statement made to Seattle Times by Reverend Ann Holmes Redding on June 17 drew a lot of criticism and little support.
"Shortly after noon on Fridays, the Rev. Ann Holmes Redding ties on a black headscarf, preparing to pray with her Muslim group on First Hill. On Sunday mornings,Redding puts on the white collar of an Episcopal priest. She does both, she says, because she's Christian and Muslim" reported the Seattle Times. Redding believes that even the most sticking point between Islam and Christianity — the nature of Jesus Christ — can be reconciled. She does not believe Jesus and God are the same, but rather that God is more than Jesus and that the Trinity is an idea and cannot be taken literally. She believes that Jesus is the son of God in the sense that all humans are the children of God and that Jesus is divine just as all humans are divine because God dwells in them. Redding (R) performs Muslim prayers. Redding attends the Sunday morning service at St. Clement's of Rome Episcopal Church in Seattle.Redding doesn't feel she has to resolve all the contradictions. People within one religion can't even agree on all the details, she said. "So why would I spend time to try to reconcile all of Christian belief with all of Islam? At the most basic level, I understand the two religions to be compatible. That's all I need." IslamOnlin.net

Ah, but who does she look to *first* for direction? Christ or Muhammad?
I have no more problem believing the religions to be compatible than she does, but there are some differences in social teachings that can't be resolved, and you have to pick which set you're going to follow. This would be like me calling myself a Christian or a Muslim because I'm a Baha'i. Sure, I believe in Jesus and Muhammad, but that doesn't make me a Christian or a Muslim. Heck, Christians believe in the Tenach, but they don't call themselves Jewish either. |

Yes, I think one can be a Christian-Muslim or a Bahai-Christian or a Muslim-Buddhist etc.. These would each, however, be distinctly individual paths. Things like the meaning of the Eucharist, her understanding of the Quran and Islamic law would be her own, and nothing wrong with that. I admire her bravery in coming out, and her ability to embrace the important commonalities between the two religions, although I also understand that it's not appropriate for her to remain a priest.

1st John 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
Surah: 4 Aya: 171 O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs. St. John 10:36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? Only if you are a schizofrenic or do not follow your religious texts.

It doesn't quite make sense to me yet, I'll probably have to read more of what she says.
However, whatever works for her, works for her. More power to her.

Surely, *Paul* you are aware that the Church declared the idea that God came down and had a bit of nookie with the Blessed Mother to be a heresy long long ago? |
