How/Why is everyone so old!? (Earth, myth, sinners, Christians)

In the Old Testament, everybody seems to be really old when they die....

"Thus all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty eight years; and he died"

"Thus all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy seven years ; and he died"
....

Are just a couple of examples.

How long is a 'year' in the new testament? If it is literally a year as used today, how did they live this long?

The human race is slowly getting longer lived.
Either they had no Idea how old they were when they died, so they applied a mythical age.
or some one got it wrong.

I thought we as a species were actually living longer due to scientific advancements, etc?

I've been told by some Christians that the conditions of life on earth were much different in the early OT days. Original sin caused things to change, to errode and decay....which is why you no longer hear of people living so old once you get past the Noahic flood story.

I thought the purpose of the flood was the cleanse the Earth of sinners and start over with the good ones.

Could be that they had a different method of counting age.

Also, some think that the earth was extremely humid at that time with no rainfall. Due to our body chemistry (mostly water), this humidity helped to prolong human life. After the flood of Noah, the atmosphere changed in that the climate became more arrid and less humid thus causing peoples age to lessen.
